We will issue rating certificates to validate House Energy Rating performance for the purposes of building permit approval. 7-star standard & Whole-of-home

From 1 May 2024, homes will be required to achieve 7-stars and a whole-of-home rating not less than 60 under the NatHERS option.

A higher star and whole-of-home rating means the building is more energy efficient.

Australia announces a 2050 net-zero emissions target

The Plan provides a clear government direction and builds upon announced targets for net-zero emissions by no later than 2050 from all states and territories (see Table 1) and from a growing number of corporations in Australia. AGL Energy, EnergyAustralia, and Origin Energy, three of the top four Australian corporate GHG emitters, have announced ambitions for net zero by 2050. In addition, more than 43 Australian companies have signed onto RE100 pledges, including Australia's Big Four banks, and called on the Australian government to increase the role of renewables in the country's energy mix.

What is Thermal Performance Assessment (Energy Rating)?

A Thermal performance assessment looks at the thermal performance of the building envelope elements, (namely, walls, floors, roof) based on the site’s climatic data and building design to determine how thermally comfortable a house will be throughout the year without heating or cooling. Performance is rated by the software and is dependent on: Type of windows, Aspect, thermal mass, insulation, ventilation and zoning.

‘Passive House’ is a design standard developed in Germany that aims to achieve high levels of thermal comfort and energy efficiency with insulation, airtightness, window and door design, and heat recovery ventilation systems.

What do the stars mean?

Zero Stars

Zero stars means the buildings envelope does nothing to keep the summer heat out and nothing to keep the winter heat in.

6 Stars

A 6 star energy home rates good for Thermal performance and is currently the standard needed to obtain a building permit and applies to all new homes and townhouses (Class 1 buildings); new apartments [Class 2 buildings], and enclosed garages (Class 10a buildings) attached to class 1 buildings.

10 Stars

10 Stars is the highest and means no heating or cooling is generally required to maintain a comfortable living space and is excellent for the environment.
